    A Modest Video Game Proposal

Apparently the above comic was in response to this:

    "A Modest Video Game Proposal"

On October 10, 2005 Thompson sent another open letter to members of the press and ESA president, Doug Lowenstein. In it, he proposes that if someone "create, manufacture, distribute, and sell a video game in 2006" that allows players to play the scenario he has written, he will donate $10,000 to the charity of Take Two's chairman Paul Eibeler's choosing [21], but development could cost millions.

The game proposal is considerably violent, following a disgruntled father of a killing victim who takes his revenge upon the games industry which he blames for 'training' the man who killed his son. The father begins a spree of murders in retaliation, attacking the offices of 'Take This' who made the game and killing the chairman 'Paula Eibeler' and her family, before beginning a road trip across the states back to Los Angeles assaulting the law firm 'Blank, Stare' who represent 'Take, This' and various gaming arcades and games stores before ariving at E3 and completing a "monstrously delicious rampage" on the participants.

The content of the concept follows very similarly with Thompson's view on the way games affect people and has proposed a storyline where the victims aren't civilians, but those responsible for releasing other violent games. It also attempts to play against the continued argument from the games industry and media that video games do not turn people into killers, a claim long contested by Thompson.

Unbenkownst to Jack at the time however, a group of modders known as the Fighting Hellfish had released exactly one week prior a San Andreas mod [22], featuring Jack Thompson himself acting out a remarkably similar scenario, at one point even assassinating Doug Lowenstein. Acting under hypnosis Thompson moonlights as Banman, and takes to the streets in his Bannedwagon to destroy the entire shipment of Rockstar's Bully before it reaches distribution, thereby finally making good on his threat. Jack later assassinates Janet Reno after thwarting her coup, which forces him to confront the realization that his time spent researching violent games have turned him into his own Manchurian Candidate.

A fake/edited copy of Jack Thompson's email has also been spotted, possibly a "reply" email. In the edit the crazed father is shot dead by a security guard before he kills anyone. This is not the real email.

It has also been noted that if the game is ever made, it will most likely be a farce of Mr. Thompson's ideas, while complying with the guidelines set down, also mocking them and Jack as much as possible.

People have blamed crimes on other things before. Ever heard of the "temperance movement?" There was a group of people at the end of the 19th century who truly believed alcohol was the root of all crimes. They managed to get something called prohibition going. There were small towns that sold their jails and disbanded their police because they thought there would be no more crimes. The result? Crimes soared.

We have people who blame guns for crimes today and managed to disarm law abiding citizens. Did crimes drop? Nope.

Loonies exist everywhere. They always blame crimes on things rather than on criminals. We gun owners have had to deal with these morons for a long time now. It's not new, and certainly not surprising to us.
Trust me. I know what I am doing.

    From http://www.penny-arcade.com/ on Wednesday.
You may have seen Jack’s proposal mentioned on various news sites. He’s offering 10 grand to charity if a game developer makes a game based on his insane proposal.

So I got his email address and I went ahead and sent Jack a note this morning:

10 grand is pretty weak man. Through our charity www.childsplaycharity.org gamers have given over half a million dollars in toys and cash to children’s hospitals all over the country.

I’ll let you know if he responds.

The fact is when we kick off Child’s Play 2005 on November 1st we’ll be going global. We’ll be delivering videogames and toys to children’s hospitals all over the world now. I don’t think there’s any better response to Jack’s insane ramblings than that. Maybe Jack would like to donate his 10 grand to Child’s Play, that could buy a lot of Game Boys.
    A little later:

My email sig had my phone number in it. Jack actually just called and screamed at me for a couple minutes. He said if I email him again I will “regret it”. What a violent man.
    And even more:
’m getting a lot of requests for more info about the Jack thing. I’ll tell you right now that I’ve had a few more conversations with the guy today. There’s a lot of material there and we may save some of it for a comic strip. I promise you’ll get the full scoop soon.

So yeah, I'd visit Penny Arcade every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for the next few weeks to see what type of stuff comes up.
