    300

Well I just got back from 300, and I will start by saying my brother and his friends loved it (teenagers). I on the other hand thought it was a smoldering pile of shit and is a prime example of why I never go to movies anymore. They succeeded in turning on of the best stories I have ever read (gates of fire) into a movie, that despite the 20 minutes of soft core porn, I could barely stay awake through and in during which time seemed to go more slowly than one of my econ stats classes.

Maybe I just expect to much from Hollywood, storyline, plot, character development... is it really that fucking hard? What they did was take little snippets of: porn, adultery and intrigue and put it all to the background of one big meat grinder. Every angle they took was underdeveloped and uninteresting, and resulted in me not giving a flying fuck.

Maybe it was just bad, or maybe I just know how good it could have been. Either way I am really annoyed right now.
Good lord are there no good games to play?

    I liked it!

You did know that the movies visuals were based on a comic, right? The
script is not an attempt in typical Hollywood fashion to recreate the past
as a costume drama. Instead it is based on Frank Millerís (of Sin City fame)
comic book graphics and captions. 300 seeks to bring a comic book, not
    Herodotus, to the screen.

However, it's sort of a hybrid. The story line was based on the script, dialogue, cinematography, and
acting which all recall scenes of the battle right from Herodotusís account.

It was developed for pop culture and that's exactly how it came across. To me anyway.

Yes, I had heard they were based of a Comic, but maybe I had wrongfully given them the benefit of the doubt because of all my experience with Japaneses "comics" which still seem to put together a compelling and coherent plot. Maybe I was expecting a movie that had a little more meat to it, is that a bad thing? I by no means expected or wanted another cookie cutter boring as hell historical Hollywood style drama either... thats why this movie excited me so much.

Regardless of whether or not it was meant to be "pop culture" I don't think thats an excuse for what I saw in the movie theater, unless you define "pop culture" as hey I am going to slap a whole lot of vapid concepts together and see where it gets me. (which I guess is the real issue here)

Granted the visuals and action were STUNNING, and there were a couple points mostly the begging and end with Herodotus that gave me the chills, but it only served to make the rest of the movie that much more bitter, because it was so weak... don't even get me started on the dialog.

Blame the comic not the movie. When something is based almost entirely on the written words from the graphic novel how can you blame the movie for weak dialogue?

When the static characters in the graphic novel are also static in the movie, can you blame the movie?

First step to enjoying a movie is to not go in with specific expectations. I haven't seen the movie yet, but chances are I will enjoy it for what it is. You cannot expect a recreation of the historical story when the movie is based on a graphic novel.

From what I've read "The film 300, released on March 9, 2007, is based on 300, and is effectively a shot-for-shot adaptation of the graphic novel."

Guess if you go to the movies expecting something that isn't there you are destined to be disappointed

Thats your problem right there. 300 is based off of Frank Millers work, not your gates of fire. Is it worthy for oscar for acting....no. Is it worth an oscar for its visuals...hell yes. Every single frame of movie looked like a piece of artwork like a cell panel from a comic book. People get bitchy when things arent just translated as they should be, and this is another instance where things were translated flawlessly. You said meat grinder like thats anything but what the trailers have hinted. I mean the title is written in blood...

I think its all about your expectations, and your expectations were clearly wrong for what this movie was about. "Frank Millers: 300".

I think this is a prime reason why M. Night Shamalamadingdongs movies still get made, because his trailers are so ambiguous, you have no clue what your watching until youve already paid your money and its too late.

Ok, so we aren't really disagreeing here... as a "movie" it was a ballz, as a compilation of gorgeous pictures it is Oscar material.

It was an awesome movie... and I admit, I never read the book. But since you are such a critic, you should know that movies are NEVER EVER like the book.

I mean look at cugo, the book and the movie had different endings. The book. The kid dies. The movie, the kid survives and lives. I think most of the problem is with Hollywood liberalism. I think they dictate and regulate what they think is appropriate for the public to absorb. The seen with the Spartan inspecting the baby. Personally? I would have loved to see him cast one into the sea of bones.

I'm just waiting for the complaints to come in for the animal killings.

I really enjoyed the movie. I could not get enough of each of the many battle scenes. My only regret is that it cut short at the end :(

Not sure if you were directing this towards me or not, but Ill assume you were. I personally liked it as a movie, but only because my expectations were different than yours. I wasnt as critical of the dialogue, even as cheesy as it was because thats what I expected from a comic book adaptation, and thats what I wanted to see, a bunch of big buff dudes yelling and killing people. I feel your pain as far as having your expectations crushed, Im still not quite over Pearl Harbor yet.

I saw the movie today with Ghetto, and I must say this was a fucking great representation of the comic as you can with a movie. I knew what the movie was about before coming into it. I read all I could about it the comic I mean and knew that it would only be somewhat historically correct. If you haven't seen it then by all means go now. You wont be disappointed.
