Good lord are there no good games to play?
That's great, you can look up Socialism in the dictionary. If you crack a book you'll find little nuggets of socialist ideals littered throughout many different political systems. But tell me, what about Obama's plan is going to turn the United States of America into a Socialist nation? And don't tell me "Nigga hates small business!!!1".
Sorry your businesses were hit hard. Mine were too. But if a 5% capital gains tax increase (In 2011) is going to murder your businesses that badly, I'd rethink your asset allocation. Start deferring those taxes if you don't REALLY need all the cash. You're doing something wrong.
Taxes just aren't right for me.
im enjoying this thread.![]()
"i want you to take the frankenstein, the bling, AND the bling bling, and roll it up into a joint"
Very, very happy that Obama won an extremely decisive victory last night.
Despite what Rush, Glenn Beck, and no doubt Hannity, Bill-O and every other right-wing outlet will be pushing (that Obama "shifted right" to win the general), this was a near-total rejection of Bush, of Rovian politics, and of the GOP as it currently exists in national politics. Not only did Bush's ridiculous failure of a presidency pave the way for a resounding victory by a pro-choice, universal heath care supporting, progressive tax re-instituting, black liberal Democrat, but Obama won a huge victory from an extremely partisan electorate while barely compromising on any of his core principles.
A few disappointments, to be sure:
- Missouri looks like it's gone for McCain; kind of a painful loss after coming so close, but really it'd just be running up the score
- Montana probably could have been flipped with just a few more advertising dollars or another visit or two; but again, just running up the score.
- Arkansas passed their dumbass adoption ban. Because a child growing up with unmarried, single, or gay parents is so much worse than living in an orphanage or foster home. Classy. But it's Arkansas.
- Didn't pick up the 60 senate seats (yet). But it looks like Georgia's headed for a run-off and Minnesota's headed for a recount. Oregon's senate race remains too close to call but is trending well. However...
- It looks like Alaska may have just re-elected a convicted felon. What?? Todd Palin is right, let them secede.
- Also, I can't believe Michele Bachmann's crazy ass got re-elected. In Minnesota.
But the major disappointment was that, once again, all the gay marriage bans passed. Prop 8 -- assuming its plurality holds -- was especially disappointing as it strips away rights already granted to people. And what's even more disappointing is that it appears that the supercharged African American turnout helped put it over the top. Ironic that a demographic seeking a civil rights milestone would be so quick to deny the civil rights of another oppressed group. But such is the state of American religion, politics, and bigotry. It will change in time, and in hopefully much shorter period than the AA community had to suffer through.
So all in all, a little bittersweet for me, but more than that I am thrilled with this huge, huge step in the right direction.

I think it's fairly ironic that the people that are yelling SMALL GOVERNMENT OMG GET YOUR HANDS OFF MY AK47 are the same ones that feel they have the right to tell people who they can't marry. Even though your analogy is moronic, I'll entertain it. Yes, if you want to marry your dog, I DONT FUCKING CARE BECAUSE IT DOES NOT AFFECT ME AT ALL MK THANKS

Bittersweet is definitely how I feel. I'm very excited about Obama, but I am extremely dissapointed in California. For being such a "progressive" state, frankly its shocking that prop 8 was passed. Justify your prejudice however you like, you know that you have no business telling anyone who they should or shouldn't marry. How would you like it if they outlawed pork tomorrow, so now your fat ass can't get bacon on your double cheeseburger? How do you feel? It's none of your fucking business who or what someone wants to commit their life to. It's absolutely infuriating that people are still so fucking egotistical they think they can write into the state constitution something that governs sexual ethics & morality. The founding fathers are turning over in their grave at this shit. Argh I haven't been this pissed off over politics since... never.
And to your point about religion - I'm sorry but just because a book or your pastor tells you that this is the way it is, doesn't mean its RIGHT. Please, for the love of god, pull your head out of the sand THINK FOR YOURSELF FOR JUST ONE MINUTE PLEASE. Try and put yourself in their shoes. Then tell me what you think is right. If that doesn't work, just go see milk. If that doesn't work, see religulous. If that doesn't work, then cut your nuts off please. Seriously, the gene pool is better off without you.
/agree so sad about these stupid idiotic "marriage" things that are becoming laws and amendments. CA wasn't the only state that passed a prop in regards to that.
get the fuck out of peoples life.
I think it's fucking hilarious that Prop 8 passed in California of all states. I don't give a shit about it though. But, if it meant that voting YES on Prop 8 would've been so hilarious for me and infuriating for so many people, I would've voted YES on it if I could've.
Never once did I say what was right or what was wrong. So please re-direct.
I simply stated he was getting a little hot headed about how other people think. EVERYONE HAS THEIR OWN OPINION. And he shouldn't be calling people names for what they believe in period.
It was put up for a vote. more people think they shouldn't marry than should, don't get all heated because other people have different opinions than you guys do. It's life.
Although the vitriol, hatred and dismissiveness might make you feel better, it wont exactly help us convert anyone... Its just wasted text... and polarizing.
Our viewpoint is in the minority, in California (only slightly) and across the world (Entire list of places that recognized gay marriage: Massachusetts, Belgium, Canada, Spain, South Africa... that is it).
Since we are in the minority it dose not work to go out and say "give us what we want or we will call you names"...
Californians are not a bunch of backwards hicks, I guarantee you that this initiative got closer to not passing than most anywhere else on the planet, so try to look at it in a more positive light... with another ballot initiative next year the results may be different.
Good lord are there no good games to play?
I would never wish anyone to be assasianted. But, I really believe that Obama may not make it through his tenure as President. Hell, he might not even make it to his inauguration. I think there are just enough racist idiots with arsenals that rival my collection that would love to pull the trigger. This might not be like JFK either. The trigger man may very well be proud of his work and gladly let himself be known thinking he has done something good for the country. All the more reason to be worried. I hope the Secret Service has the best bullet sponges money can buy.
Well first off i voted no on 8, but I can't say im surprised that it passed. What was it, prop 22? that was the same thing but just a law instead of a constituional amendment and passed? Its expecting alot for the electorate of california not to vote the same way just a few years later.
In other news, the state that I go to school in (Massachussetts) completely decriminalized marijuana. The proposition that passed stated:
This proposed law would replace the criminal penalties for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana with a new system of civil penalties, to be enforced by issuing citations, and would exclude information regarding this civil offense from the state's criminal record information system. Offenders age 18 or older would be subject to forfeiture of the marijuana plus a civil penalty of $100. Offenders under the age of 18 would be subject to the same forfeiture and, if they complete a drug awareness program within one year of the offense, the same $100 penalty.
I am Arthur King of the Britain’s! The Bitain’s? Who are the Bitains? I thought we were an autonomous collective!
Aries; hate saying it--but on the one u have quoted, I completely agree--and I know a lot of individuals feel the same way.
At least I can now understand how one could have perceived the civil rights issues of the 60's.
As sad as it is this was racing through my mind his whole speach last night and I have a feeling it will take a while before it subsides. Its is a scary fact that if he has to have nerves of steel to not let it lapse into his mind more often that it should. Anyone else notice the guy they focused on during the McCain speach last night? I know it is a stereo type, but he looked none to thrilled at the loss McCain took. I feel he is but the tip of a very frightening iceberg that still exists in the undercurrents of our society. One very similar to that which allowed the passage of legalized descrimination (Prop 8). Whether you are religious or not, I dont understand what thought process leads you to believe you can deny somebody the right to marry just because of their sexual orientation? I stay ground somewhat in the solace that this will pave the way for the issue to reach the US Supreme Court. Constitutional Ammendments, voted by the people or not (which isnt possible lol), that revert our society to the same descriminatory practices that existed untill the Civil Rights acts, cannot/should not withstand judicial scrutiny.
