What is Mumble?
Mumble is a voice-chat program similar Ventrilo.
Why is Mumble better than Ventrilo?
Latency - Non existent. When testing with Curb whose crashing at my place lately we can normally hear the delay in Vent if we say something loudly and the game has gone quiet in HoN by first hearing him from the other room then later on Vent. Very nearly instant with Mumble.
Positional Audio - What this means is with certain supported games (TF2, World of Warcraft, L4D2, etc.) you'll actually hear people talk based on their position. If I'm to your right in Left 4 Dead and I say something, it will actually sound like I'm to your right when I transmit. If I'm behind you in World of Warcraft and I say I need a heal, you'll know where to look, because you'll hear me behind you. haven't tested this yet... but it sounds fucking awesome
Normalization - Mumble has normalization built in, everyone's the same volume (I haven't tested this).
How do I get it / how do I set it up?
-You can download Mumble here (Get the stable version)
-Installation is pretty self-explanatory, just run the audio wizard and follow the instructions.
But, the best part is, it's OPEN SOURCE! So I put up a 100 user server on one of my boxes sitting on a fiber network... plenty of bandwidth so invite whoever. If you need admins, get a hold of me.
Server info:
207.135.142.85(soon to be: mumble.xclan.org)
Default port: 64738
No password (but if I add one it will be the same as vent)
