    Question.

    Alienware Area-51 Desktop
    Processor: Intel Core i7-920 Processor (8MB L3 Cache, 1MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
640 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
640 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM) 2nd drive
    6 GB Triple Channel DDR3 1333MHz (3 DIMMs)
    24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
    Dual 2GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870

This is on Dell's website at the outlet. Just curious without knowing all the brand names of the parts is this a decent deal? I figure that Alianware puts together a decent box and I know I don't XD. Was looking into the Ibuypower site but hesitant because of some marginal reviews and I don't think I can recreate this for the same price point there. I believe this box is Certified Refurbished.

Just curious if anyone has thoughts.

We buy identical rigs here at work, just with nVidia cards vs ATI.

They're pretty decent machines. They got shipped around to multiple events back to back and held up pretty spectacular.

IMO. Although the build quality is awesome and they look great, I think the price is a tad bit high (more than likely because of the AlienWare name & flare). However, what's the price on a comparable machine? I've been out of the pricing game for so long, I could be very wrong and it could be a killer deal.

Throw up some numbers on a comp with those specs. If it's =, then I'd go with the AlienWare from Dell. You'll get warranty and an already built machine with very minimal software fluff (when compared to SONY and HP).

Well, since specs and new shit comes out every fucking hour I gave following the latest/greatest. But, I can tell you that I've been a strong supporter of Alienware since back when I was playing bf1942. Never had a bad experience with them or any of their comps that I have had (new and used). Ibuypower on the other is a computer I basically had to completely rebuild, and is currently now under my mom's desk as a completely different box. I'll never even look at their website after that pile o shit.
You pay more, but I've never had a problem with the quality/performance of the Aliens I've had. (although, my friend bought a laptop once, and well... after he overheated the video card it was pretty much downhill from there, soo I guess lemons do exist...). I also didn't notice any difference in Alien after Dell took over (which frankly surprised the shit out of me).

I made the same system over two years ago for less money (2x4870 vs 2x5870) so I hardly see how this is a deal.

Fucking Alienware is ALWAYS a minimum 30%+ markup... I remember looking at those system when I was in Junior-High and splooging myself with envy. Then when I got older I figured out how much I could build the same system for and it was like 40% of their price.

F'alienware and F'dell, I would have gone my entire life buying only dells but they hardly ever (if ever) offer those great coupons anymore and otherwise its just too expensive.

Speaking of which, anyone know if AZSUS is going to come out with a new version of their laptop for the holiday season?
Good lord are there no good games to play?

I just bought an Alienware Area51.

    Core i7-970
    6gb 1333 RAM
750gb HDD (Im getting dual SSDs from a buddy that works at Intel for Christmas)
    Blu-Ray BDR
    DVD-RW
dual 5870 ATI cards (I didn't go for Fermis based mainly on THG charts and the price difference)
SB x-Fi card (yeah yeah, say what you will but this is the best sounding PC I have ever had by far)
    Win 7 64bit
    etc. etc.

My company has Dell Employee Purchase Program though, and sometimes the deals stack with other coupons. Yes I could put something like it together for cheaper, but sometimes having that 4 year warranty is just really nice =p They did a very nice job on the build, the case weighs a fucking ton, but it is actually quieter than my 2 home built PCs (core 2 duo era) and my Dell XPS 630i.

Machine runs great and contrary to popular belief, the Alienware/XPS preferred customer service is really not bad. My XPS laptop had an issue with the DVD Drive reading regular CDs (read DVDs fine), so I called customer service and they overnighted me a replacement. Only issue I have had with it and it is now 5 years old.

I haven't tried the Dell TN panel monitors, but I have an ultrasharp 2408 IPS panel 24" monitor and love it. I haven't noticed refresh rate issues really at all (its declared 5ms, but i think reality is closer to 15ms).

    Damn, I sound like a fanboi :(

Thank you all for the response.

Dell's & Alienware may be more expensvie but I'm not really into building or have any experience building my own box or the knowlege to fix any major problems for that matter. I'll use it for work & play so its nice to have the built in Tech help from India when I need it. Additionaly I have an XPS that was replaced free of charge in my third year of ownership because two of the fans at the back of the box kept shorting out ( couldn't be because the long haired cat slept behind it, or that I had to cut the cat hair out of them before the tech came?). So IMO I have had good success with Dell and lastly Body I think Michael Dell could have thrown one of those two touchdown pass's at the end of the KC or Seattle game, god knows I pay him enough money to do it! XD

Thanks all for the input. Its pricey for sure but I don't want to blow more money buy getting a machine that is going to self destruct on me.

    Pulled the trigger.

    Alienware Area-51 Desktop
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
    Dual 2GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon HD 5870
    6 GB Triple Channel DDR3 1333MHz (3 DIMMs)
    Intel Core i7-960 Processor (8MB Cache, 3.2GHz)
    Alienware High-Performance Liquid Cooling
    24X CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) w/double layer write capability
    Alienware TactX Keyboard
    Alienware TactX Mouse
640 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
640 GB SATA II Hard Drive (7200 RPM) 2nd drive

$2388 - yes pricey but I I'm good for the next 3-4 years or more.
Any chance I'll notice a difference from my windows xp Pentium D 3 Ghz, 2 gig ram and 9800 gt video card rig?

Okay so I always seem to get myself into awkward situations, like Kbot having sex in the back of a Volkswagen.

My original Alienware was delivered earlier this month. It came and had some major issues - strange error messages when connecting with the internet. Went through 5 hrs of tech support and they sent tech's to my house twice to fix. No luck the last tech said there were major problems as he could not re-install windows, the system first would not allow a bios change to alter the boot sequence and when he finally worked that out the system would not re-install windows or recognize the windows boot disk. So they agreed to replace the system.

Good news is that they sent me a new comp (not factory refurb) a and it works great. The bad news here they sent a downgraded case and graphics cards (5770's not 5780's). I lol'd and was like wtf? Enter current phone conversations with Dell Customer Reps.

Just got off the phone and all I could achieve (was the second attempt) was a free blue ray burner and another brand new system build. So now they are shipping me the comp express however I have two 80 lbs comps in my office in two refrigerator sized boxes.

I don’t think I’m really getting a great deal out of this as to all the effort I have had to put in to try to get a working system. On the other hand Dell is still liable for everything and I still have 21 days to return and burn the system if they can’t get it right.

Happy Halloween to you all. I may dress as a Dell Tech Rep – I think I can do either the Costa Rican or Indian accent now.

Hahaha nothing awkward about sex in a VW my man, Winnebago's on the hand are trouble.

Seriously though what a nightmare, blue ray burner is kind of cool but I would be throwing a hissy fit demanding an upgraded system to the one I purchased or something

Yes I agree and I can say I tried but they aren't too willing to give up anything at the moment. A blue ray burner isn't bad but a sys upgrade or discount or all the above would have been real nice.
