Eh? can someone explain it to me... because as far as I can tell from the trailer it just looks like some kind of Halo Online knockoff?
Good lord are there no good games to play?

I never played Halo so i cant comment on the vs. The oirginal planetside was basically 133 vs 133 vs 133 on the same map usually in the same place. Given there were 9 continents(maps) the scale was huge.
All FPS. No AI except for equipment planted by players or wall turrets at bases. Including land and air vehicles and small and very large exo-skeletons.
Each continent(9) was setup RISK style with bases linked and each base owning different functions which aided the owning faction. Each base was a self contained unit with a human and a vehicle spawn
At times its complete fucking mayhem. Did i mention no AI because AI is gay. The possibilities for team based action are massive or to play solo amongst the mayhem was also a lot of fun.
This is a link on youtube, the quality is poor because i think it was a beta fraps recording, its probably 6 years old and the guild i flew with when i played Terran.

    In short. It's a class-based MMO FPS.

The original game was a blast. Played many a night with Jenny. Huge maps with huge battles going on.

It would seem gameplay is progressing nicely, ive seen a few webcasts lately of art and it all looks pretty nice.
So far it seems they arent straying too far from the original concept, but not too much is being given away either.

So is this running all the time? How do you manage defense and stuff when everyone is sleeping/offline?

Yes its running all the time. There were times i would log on and most worlds were taken by 1 faction, it was just more stuff to take back the next day!
in the original each faction had home continents you could always jump too no matter who currently owned them.

How long does it take to get into the action? Do you have to trek all the way over to another base to capture it?

Cus I really have no desire to play Asherons Call 3.0...

in the first version buggies were less than a minute from the next base sphere of influence. the faster air vehicles were seconds to the next sphere. if you found yourself stranded you could always despawn to the nearest base and mount up. or despawn and jump to a closer mobile spawn vehicle. there was also the ability to bind to a spawn location, mobile or static to regroup lets say or to spawn forward as mobile spawns moved forward and redployed.
